Academic Decathlon

Club Advisor:  Mrs. Kessler (ext. 2341)
Club Description:  Kids are given a set of materials that they study for a semester and then compete against other schools in the county.
When/Where:  M-F (after school), Room H-13. Please stop by and talk to Mrs. Kessler.
Requirements:  Ability to attend and a 2.0 GPA.

Ponderosa is the El Dorado County winner for 17 straight years!

  American Sign Language

Club Advisor:  Ms. Chloe Forpahl
Club Description:  This club is open to all students and staff who want to learn ASL to communicate with the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.  The club will also inform about Deaf culture. Have fun while learning vocabulary through peer instruction and games, participate in on/off campus activities, as well as learn about colleges and job opportunities in the Sign Language field.

Club Description:  Honor's Society
When/Where:  3rd Wednesday of the month, Room H-11 or H-4.
Requirements:  Membership is determined by grades earned in academic classes. Points are given based on grades earned. An A = 3 points, B = 1 point, an A in an AP course is equal to 4 points, and a B in an AP course is equal to 2 points. Complete information is printed on the application that must be submitted each semester. Membership is not automatic, you must apply each semester.

Club Description:  Agriculture students in all grades are expected to participate in this club. Leadership skills, public speaking, animal projects, and development of financial responsibility are all goals of the FFA.

Requirements:  Must be enrolled in an Agriculture class.
 

February 19-26 is National FFA Week!

Inifinite Potential is the theme this year and it embodies all the best about FFA members, from the most recognizable symbol of the organization, the blue corduroy jacket--a symbol of pride and tradition, to the brightest future of agriculture and traditions of leadership and hard work.  More than half a million members around the nation will participate in National FFA week activities at the local and state levels.

The focus of National FFA Week is to tell America about the great opportunities available for all youth.  From its beginnings in 1928, the National FFA organization today reaches out to all 50 states, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands.  FFA is committed to developing character and leadership skills and preparing members for a lifetime of civic leadership and career success.

Club Description:  Gifted and Talented Education is a program designed for students with "gifted" abilities in academics and/or the arts.  GATE sponsors a variety of student activities and programs here at Ponderosa.

Requirements:  Students qualify for GATE by demonstrating high intelligence or high achievement as measured on an appropriate test.  Generally, PHS GATE students are identified by our feeder junior high schools.  We accept their recommendations of students for our program.  If a student has not been identified as a GATE student, but appears to have outstanding academic potential, he or she may be evaluated through referrals from parents, teachers, counselors, or the student.

Club Description:  Mock Trial is a simulated trial proceeding created to teach students legal procedures, reasoning, critical thinking, decision making, public speaking, teamwork, and leadership skills.  Students work with a hypothetical criminal case in roles of pretrial attorneys, defense and prosecution attorneys, witnesses, court clerks, bailiffs, and jurors.

Spanish Club

Club Advisor:  Mrs. Herring (ext. 2337)
Club Description:  To explore a common interest in the Spanish language and cultures of different countries.  This is a social club that offers students a chance to express themselves and learn about others in artistic ways.  Activities include pot lucks and food festivals, watching movies, listening to many types of music, learning dances, creating handicrafts and visiting restaurants or theaters.  Some students often donate tutoring services in Spanish on a monthly basis.
When/Where:  The Club meets for a pot luck lunch every Collaboration Day and holds one regularly scheduled monthly meeting on a Wednesday at lunch in Room P-4 (currently, it is the first Wednesday of the month).
Requirements:  An interest in the cultures of Spanish-speaking countries with an emphasis on art, music, dance, and food.

Club Description:  This organization consists of elected and appointed members of the Associated Student Body. Club Description:  To meet and build relationships with students. Also provide experiences that are fun which give them the chance to hear about the love of Jesus.
